Have any of you come up with a way to quickly find out what group or role a user would show up under?  I haven't had the problem yet but I can see the day coming when I get the request to set up user-2 with the same access as user-1 and user-1 was added to some group that I don't remember.

Just thought I'd ask before going off and inventing the square wheel.

Userclasses? That could do the trick.. Grant access to userclasses instead of users...

SueC

Don't think I'm a dumb blonde from California but aren't groups and userclasses the same?  Or did I misinterpret something somewhere?

You must be a brunette thenÃ,  ;D

Ok in all seriousness the functionality you ask for does not exist as a feature in Cognos Connection portal.

In other words you cannot take User A for e.g. and determine what user classes he or she belongs to or what the user's privileges are with respect to various folders.

Netvisn from Envisn software should do what you ask for. They are very close to releasing it.

Since I keep bugging them I will be among the first to know when it is released.

On this topic another bug bear I found is that you cannot add the same user to multiple user classes at the same time.

You need to repeat the steps required to add a user for every user class you want to add that blonde (or maybe brunette to)

Nope, redhead.   8)

Then I'm not alone in thinking that Cognos didn't spend too much time thinking about those of us who have to administer the monster.  I *HATE* having to page-down page-down page-down through usernames!  If I could change ONE thing in the whole package, THAT would it.

Let me know what you think of Netvsn.

Thanks.

Couple of things.

1.  You can see what groups a user belongs to if (when logged in as that user) you go under preferences, create credentials... you will then see every group this user belongs in.  (hopefully you built your security on groups, not on specific users).

2.  You can change your default setting on the number of rows you see in the portal.  Again under preferences, Number of lines in list view .. replace the 15 for 100.. this should change your " page-down page-down page-down through usernames" to " page-down through usernames" or at least be of some help.

Hope this helped

Now THAT was worth getting out of bed for this morning!    Thanks!!!    Now my cube neighbors won't know when I'm working on CRN set up stuff 'cause I won't be grumbling for each and every page-down.  Don't know why I didn't see that before.  Duh!

I'll play with the credentials.  Sounds like it might be helpful too.  Maybe I'll get the hang of this BI stuff yet....

I do extracts from our LDAP server (Active Directory), and dump those into a database I manage. That way I know who has what...also, i reclaim licenses when they drop out of AD.

SueC

IF we ever convert over to AD that will be a nice way to go.  The operations manager wants to have a consultant come in and screw up, (oops I mean ) convert us but he's been putting it off for over 6 months.  Heaven only knows why he forbade me to do it.....maybe it has to do with my previous life as a UNIX sys admin......hmmmmm......he HATES UNIX with a passion.

That just might explain it.

If it's a Cognos Consultant then that manager is a very wise man.... You should pay some more respect for that man.... :)

Btw:
1. About administrating users & roles... have you looked @ the SDK yet?
2. Change the number of lines under prefs to 999.. Even easier :p

Well he's not pulling in a Cognos employee if that's what you mean.Ã,  It'll be from a consulting company that was used to help get us started.Ã,  They sent us someone who spent 3 friggin weeks calculating how many rows/columns the cube would have despite my best efforts to tell him it didn't matter.Ã,  He was adamant that we had to know before installation and cube creation.Ã,  Then they sent another guy to actually create the cube and I was personally embarassed by what he left us.Ã,  Nothing was sorted or displayed in a way that was useful.Ã,  None of the measures were formatted, etc.Ã,  So the change over ought to be fun.Ã,  Now you tell me how wise you think he is..... ::)  If it were a Cognos consultant, we'd be on easy street!

1.Ã,  I know next to nothing about SDK.Ã,  Is there a good summary somewhere (besides reading the documentation or sales literature)?

2.Ã,  Did it.Ã,  LOVE it.Ã,  Saved my sanity!!!
