Installing COGNOS 8.4 on WINDOWS 7

Hi,

I am planning to install COGNOS 8.4 on my VAIO which came with pre installed WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM 64 bit operating system. I have contacted some people in the near by coaching centers but all of them have said that "its not possible to install it on VISTA and 7". when i inquired about the reason for it none of them were actually able to give me a reason for it.
I would really appreciate if some one can tell me the reason why it cannot be installed on VISTA or 7, Also if it is possible, can you explain me the necessary steps and precautions to install it.

Thanks,

Alp

I do not think I will bring more clarity, but I just tried to install it on Win 7 yesterday and the installer detects that it is not Windows XP (NT) and aborts the installation. Then I looked into the list of supported platform and came to know that even 8.4.1 does not support Win 7.
My experience tells me that they did not have time to certify this platform(s), and I hope that IBM would support Win 7 by  the end of the year (just my guess, no insider information :-) the next Cognos release.

I would agree Vista won't work, but I've successfully installed to Windows 7 Professional.  I don't think it will work on Win7 Home, though.  Windows Home versions usually are missing server components.  (For example, supported XP is Professional only, not home).

tupac_rd

not sure about Win 7 home, but we can definitely install on XP home. Its just that you won't have webserver and you'd have to access Cognos directly through dispatcher....

Installation on Windows 7 is not a problem! I don't have experience with the 64 bit version, but 32 bit is not a problem.

If you want to install send me your E-mail address in a personal message and I can send you a Word document on how to install it. The word document has all sorts of screen shots in it for every single step!

If you are using IIS 7.0 (that's what I used when installing for the Word document) check the following:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21343353

If you are using IIS 7.50 check the following:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21381516

If you are installing Cognos 64 bit on a 64 bit OS it is possible that you need to run IIS in 32 bit mode. (This is because a part of the 64 bit suite is still in 32 bit. And that part is the website)
In order to run IIS in 32 bit mode run the following in a command prompt:
cscript [your location]\adsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1
(Search for the adsutil.vbs to fill in [your location])
