Help on creating Dataware House?

Hi All,

Our client  is running on Cognos 8.0 to generate sales and inventory information on the JDE system which is running on DB2.They are only able to generate report and use the Cognos  to generate report on the primary sales system(JDE) which is sales made by the company to their wholesale distributors.

The secondary sale system is manual and this is  sales from distributors to retailers.

The client will want a data warehouse to extract data from the primary sales system and also secondary sales system into a data warehouse and the cognos can still be used to generate their reports.

My query is what factors we have to consider for creating a new dataware house ( Primary Sales data + secondary sales data)?

1. Relation between Primary sales and Secondary sales data?
2. Fact tables?
3. Volume of data?
4. Volume of transactions per min?
5. Attributes for reports?
6. Granularity of data?

Please let me know what need to be considered before creating a new dataware house.

Thanks and regards,
Preethi

Hi Preethi,

This is basically a forum on Cognos technology. How you build a DWH on top of  JDE/DB2 is a little out of scope.
In the past I have worked both with JDE and DB2 (AS400) and sales is just one part of the entire ERP package offered by JDE.
The main question would be about the scope of the DWH project. If you are only aiming on creating a solution for the sales department, then you risk missing out on the opportunity to satisfy the purchasing department.

In the end we had to settle for hourly refreshes to satisfy reporting demands (daily just wasn't good enough)

Check out the Datavault methodology (http://danlinstedt.com) which is a great approach , especially for transaction based source systems like a Retail system (which basicaly JDE is)
